A sensational new report has revealed the identity of the alleged “patient zero” of Covid-19, claiming that it was a Wuhan scientist involved in experiments on enhanced coronaviruses. The report identifies the scientist as Ben Hu, who, along with his colleagues Ping Yu and Yan Zhu, was reportedly conducting risky tests at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. According to the report, all three scientists fell ill with Covid-like symptoms and required hospital care several weeks before China officially disclosed the virus outbreak. Their identities had not been previously disclosed until now.
The bombshell report, authored by journalists Michael Shellenberger and Matt Taibbi, has been supported by several US government officials. The report suggests that the scientists were engaged in experiments involving coronaviruses when they became sick in 2019. This information adds to the mounting circumstantial evidence suggesting a possible lab leak and has raised questions about why this intelligence was not shared with the public earlier.
The revelation of the alleged “patient zero” could be a significant development in understanding the origins of Covid-19. It is unclear how long the US government had this information and who within the government possessed it. The report has been described as an explosive development by Australian journalist Sharri Markson and has the potential to be a game-changer, according to former World Health Organisation advisory committee member Jamie Metzl.
The three scientists, including Ben Hu, had previously been researched by the international team known as DRASTIC, which is investigating the origins of Covid-19. Hu’s work at the Wuhan Institute of Virology involved a state-funded project to determine if certain coronaviruses could infect humans. However, the results of the study were not published, and its existence was reportedly removed from the internet as the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded.
The report also highlights a video from 2017, aired by Chinese state-run TV, which allegedly shows Hu working in the lab without proper protective gear. The video also depicts other scientists from the Wuhan lab conducting virus research with inadequate protection. Alina Chan, a molecular biologist, has drawn parallels between Hu and virologist Shi Zhengli, who is known for her bat coronavirus research. Chan stated that if the information about Hu had been made public earlier, it could have changed the focus of the scientific community and media away from theories involving animals in wet markets.
The US government is expected to release previously classified material next week, which may include the names of the three Wuhan scientists. The revelation comes amidst growing calls for transparency and further investigation into the possibility of a lab leak. Earlier this year, FBI Director Christopher Wray acknowledged that the origins of the pandemic were likely related to a potential lab incident in Wuhan. China, however, has consistently denied accusations of a cover-up and distortion regarding its role in the Covid-19 story.
